There are 14 places in your home where you can keep a lucky bamboo plant, and there’re a few places you need to avoid. This guide covers them all. The guide also covers the spots within a room, number of stalks, and even the pot colour wherever needed.

East

East is, often, the first choice to place a lucky bamboo in a home. And here’s why.

In Feng Shui, the East is governed by the Wood element. The wood element represents health, family harmony, upward growth and new beginnings. Hence, people believe, placing lucky bamboo (wood element plant) in the East will usher in the energy that the wood represents.

Here’s a simple thing you can do.

Choose a bright area in the East of your home, preferably the one that receives the morning sunlight. Remember, lucky bamboo loves indirect bright light. Place your lucky bamboo there in a green, brown or a natural tone colored pot.

In the North the choice of pot differs from the East and Southeast. Here, choose a blue coloured or a glass pot as these represent the water element.

1, 3 or 6 stalks work well here. 1 represents singular focus and 3, 6 enhanced luck and positive energy.

Not to mention, you can always decorate the plant the way you wish to, but be sure not to overdo anything.

Northeast

In Feng Shui the Northeast is governed by the Earth element. Feng Shui and Vastu Shastra relate the Northeast to knowledge, mental clarity and peace of mind. Two traditions pointing to the same direction does make a strong point. That makes a lot of people believe that lucky bamboo in the Northeast brings in learning and inner peace.

Some traditions suggest keeping the plant towards the right side of the entrance. You can try this if it works with your home’s layout. But what’s more important is that the entrance of the home feels open. A healthy bamboo plant, crowding a narrow entrance, has already missed the point entirely.

One more thing to keep in mind, if your entrance isn’t bright, then don’t keep the plant there . A yellowing and struggling bamboo plant at the front door is the opposite of welcoming. 

Dining Room

In Feng Shui, the dining room represents abundance and nourishment; not just physical but mental and emotional too. A lucky bamboo here is believed to invite living, growing energy into a space that’s already associated with a fulfilled life.

You can keep a 5 or 6 stalk plant on a sideboard, dining console, or nearby shelf.

On your desk: Placing the bamboo plant on the left side of the desk is called the commanding position in Feng Shui. That is, when you sit like you’re working, the bamboo plant will be placed towards your left hand side. Keep a small plant on the desk as a bigger one will occupy a lot of your working space and may become a distraction.

2. The room isn’t looking odd after placing the plant
3. There’s enough bright light for the plant to remain healthy
4. And you, personally, feel happy with the plant being in the bedroom

Not to mention, choose a small plant and place it on a dresser, shelf, or bedside table; not right beside your head.

• Busy walkways: A plant that gets knocked over time and again isn’t a placement, but an obstacle. Place it to be stable and undisturbed.
  
• Hot and Cold Areas: Areas that have hot or cold temperatures such as AC units or heaters will adversely affect the plant’s health; hence avoid keeping it there.
  
• Behind furniture: Why hide something beautiful that can be admired and loved. Bamboos are visual, let them be like that.
  
• Under a staircase: A staircase is an overhead structure and creates downward pressure in Feng Shui. A plant symbolising upward momentum isn’t supposed to be kept there logically.
